2018 #GivingTuesday: Results from Blackbaud

Blackbaud reports mobile devices play a large part in breaking records

Blackbaud, Inc. is arguably the largest repository of nonprofit data because of its donor management and fundraising software, including my favorite: Raiser’s Edge. It first promoted the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as Giving Tuesday in 2012. The concept is to give thanks to those nonprofits that promote “social good,” which is Blackbaud’s latest slogan.

Results of #GivingTuesday

The company reports that #GivingTuesday donations broke records. In fact, Blackbaud’s software alone processed $62.6 million in the United States. Of course, this doesn’t capture all of the #GivingTuesday funds nonprofits processed using other systems such as SalesForce, Paypal, DonorPerfect, etc.

Although giving was up marginally year over year (Blackbaud processed $60.9M in 2017), it’s up 518% since the movement’s inception in 2012. Adding to that, the average online gift amount went up fairly significantly, by 10%.

Blackbaud also reports that 29% of online givers gave via mobile device, up from 13% in 2012. So, nonprofits, be sure your sites are responsive.

#GivingDay Trends from Blackbaud

Word on the streets from Raiser’s Edge users countrywide is that the day after #GivingTuesday, known among my peers as #GiftProcessingWednesday, is “gift processing hell.” Of course, we say this in jest, as processing a heavy amount of gifts means our marketing efforts have been an incredible success. It also means our organizations go on to support deserving missions.

However, a quick peek into the lives of the folks who process gifts for a living will display some serious stress. Managers: Be kind to your donor database professionals this time of year. Their biggest complaint? That perhaps the fundraisers on the team might think of them as they go out for a leisurely lunch. Because they haven’t had any today.
